The history: The equipment and machinery mounting pads are an important vibration control components used by the industry. Though there are a number of machine mounting pads available in the market you can make a choice depending on your requirement. They necessarily consist of a metallic portion that is bonded to the elastomer. About three-quarters of a century ago the machine pads were designed for shear loads. The shapes were circular or the parts were available in strip lengths so that they could be cut to size. However, the product failed due to overloading. The bond between the metal and elastomer gave way. As a result, the compression mountings came into existence.

Design changes and material selection: The machine mounting pads based on the compression principle can withstand overloading and have a deflection characteristic similar to the shear load mountings. Over a period of time, a lot of improvements have taken place and the machinery mounting pads are available in single and double deflection types. You can also opt for the machine pads that have the rubber bonded at the bottom of the base plate. These machine mounting pads do not require any anchoring as the friction between the floor and elastomer holds the machine in place. The choice of neoprene as the elastomer element was natural because of its resistance to oil and water. The machine pads with neoprene elastomers perform well in the harsh industrial environments. The top bolt secures the machine feet to the machine pad. The process of installation is extremely simple and all you have to do is to lift the machine and place it on top of the machine mounting pads.

A versatile product: The neoprene pad with an alternating height rib pattern is used to dampen the vibrations and noise caused by equipment that operates at medium or high rpm. Typical examples include transformers, generators, compressors, fans, pumps and air conditioners. The neoprene pads are about 10 mm thick with a load capacity of 0.05 Kgf/ mm2. The pads can offer a deflection of about 3 mm and we can use multiple pads in layers if the deflection requirements are higher. Neoprene has better environmental standing in harsh conditions as compared to natural rubber. The neoprene pads can work effectively in the industrial atmosphere involving water and oil.

The combination with a natural product: The neoprene cork pad is made from a pair of neoprene ribbed sheets with a cork center sandwiched between the two. The total thickness of the neoprene cork pad is around 25 mm. It has excellent resistance to ageing, compression set, water and oil. The loading capacity is the same as that of a neoprene only pad at around 0.05 Kgf/ mm2. However, the neoprene cork pads offer a much higher deflection at 4.5 mm. Here also multiple layers of the neoprene cork pads can be used for higher deflections. The applications include vibration isolation from compressors, generators, pool pumps, air conditioning units and a variety of other equipment.

Other anti-vibration products: For old pieces of equipment, simple vibration absorbers in the form of rubber squares and composite foam with a height of about 20mm are the most suitable. They can provide solace from the noise emanating from the vibrations shaking the whole support structure. You can slide them beneath the furnaces and they act as furnace thermal mounting pads. Care must be taken that they are not exposed to naked flame or molten metal. The furnaces are otherwise insulated and hence these products give the desired performance. The HVAC mounting pads are used for installation of the air conditioning equipment. As per the recent regulations, the HVAC equipment is to be mounted on the rooftops of the high rise buildings. Since these pads are exposed to the atmosphere, neoprene is the ideal choice of the elastomer in these vibration isolation pads.

Select the vibration mounts with the right dampening elements

If you want to prolong your machine life by dampening the vibrations you can go in for the neoprene cork pads for your applications. The typical uses include air conditioners, pumps, presses, generators, fans and motors. The neoprene cork pad has a half inch thick cork layer centered between the ribbed neoprene pads. Neoprene is an excellent elastomer that is resistant to ageing, compression set, water and oil. Thus, the neoprene pad can withstand the toughest of environments on the shop-floor. While cutting the machine pad according to the mounting base of the machine, care must be taken to leave a ½ inch margin all around. The neoprene rubber cork pad can help in additional vibration isolation with the alternate rib height design. This design is well adapted to both high and low weight loads.

The neoprene vibration isolation pad also comes as an elastomer sheet with waffle molded design. The isolation pads can be placed beneath the feet of the machine by lifting it gently. The waffle design in the rubber pads allows for material expansion and highest deflection without loss of stability. The neoprene vibration isolation pads not only provide a solid hold for both the floor and machinery but also give the maximum resilience and minimum of creep.

The natural rubber vibration pads withstand a load of 45 pounds per square inch. Each square section has four suction holes of about ½” diameter that gives the firm footing to the equipment on the floor. The non-vibration pad comes in an 18” X 18” size made up of multiple square sections that can be easily cut and separated as per the customer requirement. The rubber pad has a rated deflection of 3/16”.
