Vibration isolator and spring isolators for isolation of HVAC system

Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) are technologies that provide indoor comfort to people.  Here the principles of thermodynamics and heat transfer is used to build and create an HVAC system. HVAC system is designed to provide indoor comfort and ensures proper ventilation in the closed environment. HVAC is one of the most critical element of inhabited structures, which includes offices, hotels and even residential skyscrapers. As the name specifies H (Heating) V (Ventilation) AC (Air Conditioning) has three central functions of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. They are all interconnected as the systems is designed with the need to provide thermal comfort and acceptable indoor air quality within reasonable installation, operation, and maintenance costs. Installation of HVAC system involves large number of ducts, chiller units, ventilation equipment’s and rotating components that is mounted on building structures depending upon the size of space and capacity of HVAC system. Since it involves plenty of moving and rotating components, it results in generation of noise and vibrations. However, there are a number of vibration isolators and spring isolators available in the market for vibration and noise isolation of these HVAC system.

Issue of vibration and noise is addressed together because they are closely related; making it essential to tackle both in one go. Vibration often originates from rotating machinery which tends to increase with time, as system components tend to wear off. One of the most effective method to isolate vibrations is by installing Vibration isolators equipped with damping pads or spring mounts for rotating machinery. Eliminating vibration completely through vibration isolators in HVAC is a tedious task, but it can be isolated to a point where its effects are very negligible and it doesn’t affect the efficiency of system.

Vibrational Isolators prevents high frequency vibration from entering the system and dissipates it by changing kinetic energy of vibration into a different form of energy. Methods of energy dissipation vary according to the dampening mechanism with which vibration isolators are built. In case of spring isolators, the vibrational energy from rotating elements is dissipated by the flexible steel spring which deforms and ensure minimum transfer of vibrational energy.

Spring isolators in HVAC prove to be very effective in case of HVAC systems. They are mounted on the ceiling, as dropped ceiling grids can become very noisy when subject to vibration. They effectively isolate and dampens the noise level offering a noise free surrounding. Vibration and noise can be addressed through prevention or mitigation. In structures that are under design phase, it is important to make sure that rotating elements like motors, chillers and ducts is properly sized and specified with adequate supports and mounted with Vibration isolators at effective locations. Spring isolators in general as an isolation equipment is highly durable and can withstand extreme environment. They are often used in varying applications including military applications. If rightly selected they form the best isolation equipment for the HVAC system.
