Effective yet reasonable rubber mounts for isolation of vibration from mechanical systems

The age where we are constantly upgrading our technological system and focused towards developing highly precise and accurate manufacturing processes; isolation of machinery to prevent the transmission of vibration and noise is extremely critical. Vibration control proves to be efficient whenever the equipment is located on higher floor or next to quiet surroundings. Rubber mounts is primarily used for reducing the effect of the dynamic forces generated by moving parts in a machine into the surrounding structure.

Every machine during its operation creates vibration or shock of varying intensity or amplitude. In general, speed and vibrational forces share direct proportionality with each other. The requirements for isolating these vibrational forces purely depend upon the local conditions of installation and applications. There are three principle factors

which control the selection of a vibration isolator for a particular machine or application. The first is the weight to be supported, the second is the operating frequency of the machine and the third is the rigidity of the structure supporting the machine. Scientifically vibration is a resultant force and the role of rubber mount is to provide an opposed force which can effectively reduce the transmission of vibration to the other elements. To provide the desired isolation or dampening, rubber mounts need to be composed of truly resilient material, which when subjected to a static load, deflects and isolates the source of vibration from receiver.

Rubber isolation mounts are highly engineered yet very simple device, designed to isolate shock and reduce noise. The characteristics of Rubber isolator mounts determine its efficiency as a device for storing vibration energy and amount that it deflects under load. In case of shock isolation, rubber mounts dissipate the energy with each impact and ensures there is no transmission of energy. In case of noise, rubber mounts act as a resilient medium between the equipment and the structure. This breaks the path of structural borne noise which ultimately results in noise reduction of areas outside the machinery room and in the area around the machine.

Rubber motor mounts are used to reduce internal vibrations of the motors and its selection depends upon operating frequency or on the load of motors. Rubber mounts are available in various mounting arrangement and materials. The most widely adopted type of rubber mounts are cylindrical mounts & metallic mounts which offers optimum vibration isolation and dampening. In general scenario, where the amount of load is less, rubber mounts made up of natural rubber are implemented. Whereas under critical scenario, where amount of load and operating frequency is on a higher side, synthetic rubber mounts are implemented as the deflection/ isolation offered by synthetic rubber is much superior as compared to natural rubber. Rubber mounts acts as a buffer between source of vibration and receiver of vibration and the capability of rubber isolators defines the stability of entire structure. The Shape, size, location and construction of mounts vary and solely depending upon the type of application. Right from washing machine to heavy engine and motors, rubber mounts play a crucial role. Rubber mounts prove to be one of the best and cheapest critical component in tackling unwanted vibrations and noise.
