The raw material used for the insulator is EPDM rubber, thus providing it with the requisite durability. The twin-stud cylindrical vibration mounts have the threaded studs on each side with the elastomer in the center. What is deflection and why is it a significant factor in isolation selection?

Deflection can be described as the change in a flexible elements unloaded to loaded height. It is the deflection that is the determining factor as to how well the isolator works. More deflection equals to less vibration transmission. There are mainly three classes of vibration isolators based on deflection they are as follows:

  1. Isolation Pads: These isolators deflect the least hence they are more suitable as a noise breaker. Isolation Pads tend to have hard surface-to-surface contact and so reduces high level frequency vibration.
  2. Neoprene mounts and hangers tend to deflect much better than isolation pads and are therefore area better isolation vibration control option.
  3. Spring isolators have the best deflection for maximum vibration reduction.

Structural and location factor

Structure and location plays a very critical role in deciding on equipment and this especially important for isolating suspended equipment.   Sensitive Structural Supports Require Greater Deflections. Location of equipment in the building is the main decisive factor for selecting either neoprene mounts or springs. While Neoprene mountings are satisfactory under equipment on a very stiff support structure such as a ground supported concrete slab. On the other hand, upper building levels where the structure can be very sensitive to vibration, springs are necessary. The key to proper isolator selection in upper levels is to make sure that the isolator deflection is much higher than floor deflection. If equipment is running below 1200 rpm, springs are required regardless of location.

To select a suitable Isolation for mechanical equipment in a particular applications one need to find out

  • Whether the equipment speed is above 1200 rpm and if not, use spring mountings. Vibration from equipment running at slow vibration speeds can pass through low deflection isolators and could possibly amplify.
  • Whether the equipment is placed on a concrete building structure or a flexible vibration sensitive structure. If in case placed on a rigid structure use double deflection neoprene or springs are the best form of isolators and if in case flexible use springs. Ideally deflection of isolator should be more than three times the deflection of the support.
  • Whether equipment’s have corner weight or weigh at each mounting point.  Always the load rating of each spring or rubber mounting should match to the portion of the equipment’s weight at the corners or mounting points. Equipment corner weights usually differ and require mountings with different load capacities. Oversized mountings may be possibly reducing vibration control. Hence select mountings with load capacities equal to or slightly greater than the portion of the equipment weight is always advisable.
